setting a new record
We broke the Guinness World Record for the world's largest rueda circle. How cool is that?
The previous record set in Miama was a circle of 173 couples and 5 commands.
Our circle yday was for
176 couples and 10 commands. So, not only did we break the record, we set a new one for the most number of calls as well.
It was amazing how we managed to do it though.
We initially only had 140+ couples and everyone was damn sian becuz we thought that we wouldn't be able to break the recortd anymore. I mean, how to find 30 couples who can rueda out of nowhere?
Then many many phonecalls later, some gender bending (girls became leads instead of followers), and a short crash course on the ten commands for salsareos who didn't know rueda..and bingo! We have our new record.
Anyway, the salsa fest was really great. The way people dance from other countries are so different and it's really interesting to see how the way
culture affects the way people dance. Wow. The differences between asian salsa and ang mo salsa (sorry, can't think of a more succint way to put it) are so glaringly obvious.
The Ang Mos are so liberated in their dance...and it's good because they really let go and enjoy themselves. They have so much styling, so much shines, so much individualism and so much spontaniety.
Yet, honestly...I still prefer the way Asians dance. Yes, though we are less spontaneous (i just can't imagine Jackson pulling the Basketball move as shown by Mario on June), our dance appears softer and hence more elegant and refined. Which is very reflective of our collectivist asian culture.
I still
like the way the Malaysians dance. And I tink it's so totally cool that they incorporate the shines into the turn patterns. To me, they seem to have the perfect blend of spontaneity and Asianess.
Okay, I don't know if what i just wrote makes sense..but whatever.
Oh, oh...and the international performers like Edie the salsa freak, Susana Monterio and Super Mario were just the coolest man. They are like 1 million light years ahead of me. Damn inspired lor.
I want to be able to do body rolls like Susana!
Ah, and the best thing that happened?
We fixed jp's double turn problem. Something that has been plaguing us for a while now.
Maybe now we can aim for 4 turns? Hehehehe.
Urgh. But I'm dead tired.
Just 2 days is enough to kill me.
My poor poor feet. :(
p/s: Dance heels really make a hell lot of difference. I should have bought myself a pair looooong ago man.
